Itinerary Highlights - Great American Train Tour
Great American Train Tour
Tour highlights include….
Rail Journeys:
There is something special about traveling by train, particularly in the USA where the distances are so vast. From the comfort of your own private compartment, you have a view into the “backyards of the nation” as the train passes through the many small towns and cities of the 28 states the route touches. Just 6 nights are spent on the train and the great rail journeys include:
- San-Francisco-Denver (1426 miles) crossing the High Sierras and Rocky Mountains
- Denver-Chicago (1042 miles) across America’s breadbasket through the rich agricultural heartland crossing both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers
- Chicago – New York (960 miles) the Lake Shore Limited follows the rivers and Great Lakes scenic route
- Washington – New Orleans (1157 miles) The Crescent travels through the Southern states of Virginia, Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana
- New Orleans – Los Angeles (2033) The Sunset Limited travels America’s oldest and most historic rail route through the “big country” of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
City stays in first-class hotels all centrally located include:
- San Francisco (3 nights) – “city on the bay” full of character and vitality
- Denver (2 nights) - gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park
- Chicago (2 nights) – fabulous architecture and high-rises, the “golden-mile” of Michigan Avenue
- New York (3 nights) – Broadway, 5th Avenue, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Empire State Building
- Washington DC (3 nights) – Capitol Hill, The Mall, White House, Mt Vernon, monuments galore
- New Orleans (4 nights) – French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Plantation Homes, Mississippi River
- Los Angeles (2 nights) – Santa Monica Beach, Hollywood, Beverley Hills, Rodeo Drive
Comment:
I have escorted this tour on many occasions and would do so again tomorrow. Great train journeys, great cities and on each trip, I have seen something new and met different people. And that is one of the beauties of this tour - travelling by train gives you the opportunity to actually meet and mix with the locals – something you just cant do when strapped into an aircraft seat.
